Inter-Regional Competition Grade 1 / Prep B April 2012
Jul 19, 2012, 10:43 am

Following success in the London Region Prelims in March, Harefield had a number of young gymnasts selected to compete for the London Region in an Inter-Regional Competition in Southampton. This competition has been running for several years, but this year has grown in importance with 7 out of the country’s 13 regions now competing. With so many gymnasts the competition was split over 2 days with the Prep B competition on Saturday 14th April and Grade 1 on Sunday 15th April.

Competing in the Prep B competition, Men’s Pair Tom Bowra and Max Tilbury did really well and finished in 5th place. Our Mixed Pair Mohan Erbus and Wendy Wilson, in only their 2nd competition, managed a score of 24.23 to come in 9th place. Our Prep B Women’s Pair Amber Harvey and Charlotte Clarke struck gold with a really good overall performance and our Women’s Group, Alina Cirstescu, Scarlet Buhargiar and Helaina Hudson also won gold despite a 0.2 penalty.

Our only entry on Sunday in the Grade 1 competition was Men’s Pair Tommy Blocks and Joe Bray. They scored highly both in execution and artistry, coming out with a score of 26.55 for gold, a whole 3 marks above the pair in silver position.

Harefield scores contributed to the overall team score making London Region the Inter-Regional Champions for 2012. This competition will hopefully see all 13 regions competing in 2013, a chance for our young gymnasts again to show themselves at a national level. All competition scores can be found in the Results Section.

British Championships March 2012
Jul 19, 2012, 10:39 am

The 11-16 Women’s Pair, Sofia Simeone and Umber Sohal, and the 11-16 Women’s Group, Francesca Burrows, Michaela Cook and Jessica Keys took part in their first British Championships in Stoke on Trent over the weekend of 24th and 25th March 2012. Both partnerships completed clean balance and tempo routines in qualifying rounds on the Saturday finishing in 4th and 2nd place respectively to qualify for the finals on Sunday. This year there has been a change to the structure of the finals for the 11-16 Age Group. Instead of choosing which routine to compete, all 11-16 WP had to perform their Balance routine and 11-16 WG their Tempo routine. Not only did the girls follow each other on to the floor but after performing 2 excellent routines came out with an identical score of 28.03, both achieving their highest ever scores in a competition. Sofia and Umber fought their way into a medal position and were awarded the bronze medal just behind South Tyneside and Heathrow. Francesca, Michaela and Jessica beat the Oxford trio into silver position just behind the current European and World Champions from Heathrow. For more details on the scores please see the Results Section.

Gymnasts Medal at the National Finals
Jul 30, 2011, 8:10 am

Some of our young acrobats wowed judges at the recent NDP British Championships in Stoke-On-Trent bringing back two more British titles to the club after a weekend full of excitement. Jessica and Georgia performed two wonderful routines to withhold the National Title for two years running. The girls were National Champions in 2010 and Grade 2 and easily took the title again this year at Grade 3. Sofia and Umber performed with precision to take the gold medal and title of the new Harefield British Champions at Grade 2. Josie and Louise showed off their talent for acrobatic gymnastics, by just missing out on the gold medal and Grade 1, placing se-cond. In the tumbling section of the competition, Ben performed excellently, after only a small amount of practise in the gym to come away with a well deserved bronze medal. Dedicated tumbler Jonny came away with the gold medal and the National Champion title to his name.

The three gold's, one silver and one bronze medal was a fantastic result for Harefield that con-tinued the successful year for the club.

Young Gymnasts shine at the Allstarz Novice Invitational Competition
Jul 30, 2011, 8:09 am

It was a hot day in June, that some of The Harefield Gymnastics Academy’s youngest gymnasts experienced their first ever competition. Members of the Preparation and Intro to Acrobatics squads travelled to Croydon to compete against other London Clubs at the new Novice Set Levels. These floor sequences incorporate individuals and pair elements, and range from Set 1, to a more difficult Set 3. For most this was a first nerve-wracking but exciting experience of performing in front of an audience and the dreaded judges!

The competition started with the Set 1 Under 11 category, where Lucy O’Brian, our youngest competitor alongside Megan Maxwell performed a wonderful sequence proudly winning the bronze medal. Missing out by only 0.05, Elsie Potter and Francesca McInnes also performed a stunning routine to finish in 4th place. In the Men’s category, Max Tilbury and Tom Bowra received a well-deserved silver medal, receiving a brilliant score for such an inexperienced pair.

The Set 2 competition followed where the majority of our pairs were involved. In the Un-der 11 category, the competition was tough as the lowest score was 8.05! Helaina Hudson and Scarlett Buhagiar worked together beautifully to gain 6th place, whilst Charlotte Smith and Jessica Penn gained 5th place, despite only working together previously a few times! Megan Maxwell and Annalise Stockley performed a great routine, considering they were placed together the evening before and just missed out on a medal finishing 4th. In the Over 11 category, Lucy North and Lucy Roberts-West, and Francesca McInnes and Holly Roberts-West worked wonderfully together to finish 5th and 3rd respectively, whilst Patricia Odysseos-Suther and Fleur Noriega-Constable placed 2nd after receiving fantastic scores. In the mixed pair category, Nicole Livingstone and Tommy Block completed a stunning routine to receive a well deserved gold medal.

The day concluded with the Set 3 group, the hardest of the day. We only had one pair consisting of Charlotte Clarke and Ellie Cumber, who were young and looked tiny compared to the rest of their competitors. The girls gave a very mature and well executed performance, despite their routine being changed by competition organisers only minutes before they competed. After a small amount of confusion the girls were finally presented with their gold medals, to finish off the day on a high. All gymnasts were applauded by the organisers on the their excellent behaviour and their wonderful team spirit, cheering for every competitor and not just those from their own club. This was a fantastic experience to prepare the gymnasts for the many competitions to come in the near future!

Recently a selection of our gymnasts who attend The Harefield Academy School trav-elled to Stoke-on-trent to compete in the School’s National Finals. The team was made up of students from Year 7 right through to Year 12, a sign of the depth of our gymnastics squad. Michaela, along with twin sister, Josie Cook and James Karageorgis, also Year 8, along with Charlie Malin, Year 7 and Ben Findlay, Year 12 made up this year's team.

All gymnasts put out solid routines, despite working together only a few hours each week to prepare. None of the gymnasts competing were in their formal Acrobatic partnerships which makes their efforts even more outstanding. Mixed pair Josie and James brought home a bronze medal, as well as Kyla and Ben. The Academy staff mentioned how proud they were to have such wonderful gymnasts representing their school and their team spirit and behaviour was recognised as outstanding.

Medals at the Mayors Cup in Bulgaria
Jul 27, 2011, 10:53 am

Seven of our Elite gymnasts have returned with International medals around their necks after  the Mayor’s International Cup, Held in Bulgaria, May 2011. This was a first for all of our gymnasts competing in the highly competitive Age Group Category. The gymnasts were select-ed to represent the London team at this prestigious event, after the Regional Championship, in March.

The girls competed spectacular routines to impress the multi-national crowds and to receive some outstanding scores. Ex-perienced pair Jessica and Georgia (Current National Champi-ons) fought hard throughout the competition to receive the silver medal just ahead of Harefield teammates. Sophia and Umber competed beautifully to receive the bronze medal in the women’s pair category. Also competing were Harefield’s trio of Francesca, Michaela and Jessica. These girls definitely stole the show with their energetic and fantastically executed routines, gaining gold medals all around for each of their routines. To top off the trip , London coach Ventsi then proudly received the trophy for the highest scoring team of the competition! This is a fantastic start to the girls future International Gymnastic career’s.

Rachael now coaches the Preparation Squad alongside fellow former elite gymnast Ciara McGrath, and also coaches General Gymnastics most nights.

We wish her all the luck in her future career as a Harefield coach...

First Club Show is a Spectacular Event
Jul 20, 2010, 6:22 pm

A sweltering and sunny Saturday in June saw the entire club come together for the first time to perform in Harefield Gymnastics Academy’s first ever club show, postponed at Christmas because of snow, but finally ready for an audience in the summer.

Gymnasts as young as 4 years old were performing alongside our senior pairs and groups to entertain a packed audience. Parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles and friends piled in to the sports hall at The Harefield Academy on a sunny Saturday to watch a fantastic display of general and acrobatic gymnastics.

The show stopping lights and music were nothing compared to the routines on show. Our squad gymnasts highlighted their formal dance training with a beautiful routine choreographed by our resident ballet teacher and their gymnastic ability with highlights from routines of our range of British Champions and specially choreographed performances from all classes.

Performances included the National Development Squad showing off to Singing in The Rain and the Mini Squad getting spooky with a ultra-violet lit routine to Ghostbusters. The parents even took to the gymnastics floor as ‘Hell-bound’ to perform their very own routine to ‘Pump It’ teaming up with their children to showcase how the older generation do it, but don’t write them off yet, despite bad backs and ruptured tendons they performed aerial skills and tricky balances to rival their kids – look out for them at the next Veterans British.

General gymnasts, who got to watch the squad performances, held the spotlight in their own routines to a selection of upbeat pop music. Their coaches helped them round equipment they have practiced during their weekly gymnastics sessions, showing off their gymnastic skills. The smile on the faces of all the children performing was enough to entertain and make the audience smile along with them.

The grand finale was a breathtaking routine performed by our international and national gymnasts, over 10 minutes long and changing from balletic to dynamic styles of dance, mixed with a selection of the squads’ partner and individual skills to finish off a truly spectacular show.

The club would like to thank everyone involved in staging the show, making costumes and selling tickets. It was a fantastic show and we look forward to putting on an EVEN better performance next time.
